ONE NIGHT STAND
Written by Martin Casella (but not really)
Directed by Talia Shire
Starring Ally Sheedy, A. Martinez and Frederic Forrest
I wrote this in the mid-eighties, before FATAL ATTRACTION and THE JAGGED EDGE were made. Before the marital thriller craze began. It was made after those all came out. Except for a year's worth of rewrites to the original script, I had almost nothing to do with the film. Much of the dialogue was rewritten by someone else. I visited the set once and left after watching one take of a scene. Talia Shire, however, was lovely to work with. So was her late husband Jack Schwartman. They are the parents of Jason Schartzman. He used to be around at meetings; he was just a small child then, and very sweet.
Believe it or not, there were several Oscar winners and nominees in front AND behind the camera. Including producers Roger Corman and Francis Ford Coppola. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Unseen by me. A critic friend called, said he'd seen it, and wanted to know if I "actually wrote this???!" It did, however, get a good review in the Hollywood Reporter. And in People Magazine. Life is funny that way.
My buddy John - brave and noble man that he is - went to the one theatre in America (in a mini-mall in Hollywood) where the film had its theatrical premiere. For a week. He said I should go see it but not to tell anyone I was the writer. And to put a bag over my head.
Full discloser... I have never seen the whole movie. Watched about twenty minutes of it late one night on Cinemax. Throwing pillows at the television. Moaning. My partner Patrick kept grinning and demanding to know: "You actually WROTE this?????" Yes And my name was misspelled in the credits. The residuals were nice, though.
