BUSTED JESUS COMIX
screenplay by Martin Casella
based on the stage play "Busted Jesus Comix" by David Johnston
This screenplay is currently under option to film director and animator Leon Joosen.
It is a live action film that features animation. Which isn't for children....
About the above poster, Edie Falco and Jessie Eisenberg aren't in the film. Just the poster. We would LOVE for them to be in film. If you know them.
The original play BUSTED JESUS COMIX is based on the true story of Mike Diana, a teenage Florida boy who was prosecuted and convicted of distributing obscene material – a comic that he drew. This conviction is the only successful one of its type in the USA. The court ordered three years probation, a $3,000 fine, community service and a rehabilitation program to cure Mike of his homosexuality. It also forbade him from drawing any more comic books.
In the play and screenplay, Mike - now called Marco - runs away to New York and applies for a job at a coffee shop, breaking the terms of his probation. The rest of the story centers on his job interview with Cora, the tough lesbian manager of the coffee shop, who draws Marco out of his shell. Through the interview and its aftermath, which is interspersed with Marco's memories of the court case, the comic book he drew which landed him in jail and the rehab program he was forced to attend, Cora comes to understand what these events have done to Marco's soul. A remarkable woman who is just as damaged as Marco, Cora takes it upon herself to save Marco not only from himself - but from the terrifying, animated demons who now haunt his mind.
